The PaperArtsy blog has been full of inspiration this week and I had a play with a few techniques from Ellen Vargo's tag book which is stunning.
Unfortunately I don't have any of her stamps (yet!) and I don't have the elusive dry waxed deli paper that appears on so many USA mixed media artists lists of essential supplies - if anyone knows what this is in the UK please let me know - and where to buy it.
Any way I used the paint scrape technique to apply Fresco Finish paints to my background, tissues paper to stamp the black and white repeating border and distress ink to stamp background in toning colour as well as a few other bits and pieces to create this journal page ... hopefully I am in time to join in this week!
It needs a bit more work and the 'journaling' but I think I will make this into a double page spread in my DLP journal
I hope you are all following the PaperArtsy blog his week (and always!) for some great stamping and mixed media inspiration ... as promised here is my second project using some of the Chatsworth Collection paper scraps left over from my mini album which featured two nights ago ... this is a project I came up with a while ago for a swap and it makes a lovely gift for a 'crafty' friend ...
You could substitute the button card for a
small envelope to hold a gift card – actually there is room in the pocket for
both. I have added an optional charm on the side using a Tim Holtz hinge clip.
The back is a piece of sturdy cardstock 6”
x 4” covered on both sides with papers from the Chatsworth Collection. The
button card is 3” x 5” and is also covered with paper on both sides. Corners
are rounded and the edges distressed with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. The pocket
is made using paper that measures 5” x 3” – I have scored 3 sides at ½” and
then used a plate to cut the unscored edge slightly curved. The ½” tabs are
turned in, bottom corners rounded and then lace is glued to top edge before distressing
edges and gluing pocket to card.
I made the flowers dimensional. After die
cutting using the Paperartsy Grunge Flowers die in the smaller 2 sizes the petals
are snipped towards the centre …
Then the back of each petal is gently
‘rounded and shaped’ using a ball tool. The red inner flower is a punch. I’ve
added pearl centres, die cut leaves and a bit of glitter.
The buttons are made from a Marianne die. I
have cut 4 layers of card and 1 from the paper for each button and glued them
together – the top paper layer has been stamped with the script stamp from
LPC014, the edges distressed with Black Soot Distress Ink and then a thick
layer of Glossy Accents added on top. The card they are tied to has been
decorated with stamps from Ink and the Dog Buttons Plates 2 and 4.

My blog has been neglected lately - I haven't been spending much time in the art room (cupboard!) since Christmas. I have been trying to keep up with and sort out my work life - the dreaded day job that is - and have now achieved this - yes, once again I have handed in my notice! No job to go to but have realised it will be fine and I am now sure I do not want to be an OT any longer ... watch this space!
I have got a few things to share ... first another 'recipe' tag ... the recipe is 'a stamped floral image, text and the colour red' ...
The background is painted over a book page using the fabulous Fresco paints by Paperartsy, then stamped flowers, liquid pearl centres and a charm.
I have been dabbling in Art Journaling for a number years on and off and always enjoy the process, however I make too many 'pages' I don't like and then the journal gets abandoned and lies unfinished.
I also prefer smaller scale projects.
A few days ago I bought Kate Crane's online class Journal Soup - it is brilliant - and has solved the 'journaling' problems I have! Loose pages. small size and quotes (I have a collection of hundreds) ... here are some recent attempts ... the backgrounds are a mixture of inks and Paperartsy Fresco paints ...
Darcy over at Art and Sole is running a challenge this week. She has designed some fabulous stamps for Paperartsy and has been making Christmas cards. Her challenge was to take one stamp and make several different cards with it. I only caught up with the challenge late last night and with limited time today have only had time to make three ...
I have used the Christmas trees from Egg & Nog 1 as my main stamp(s) and added word stamps from the same set, from Egg & Nog 2 and from Egg & Nog 4
Card 1 is clean and simple style ... I've cut the trees apart and just stamped 2 of them so they would fit nicely inside the frame which I have embossed with a die. The 'snow' is Paperartsy Fresco Finish paint in Snowcap ... I just masked the space off with post-its and sponged it on ... silver star brads top the trees to finish it off...
Card 2 is made using a pattern ... I think its from Mojo Monday ... this time the trees are embossed onto different papers, cut out and added to the top mat ... the middle tree is coloured with Stickles in candy Cane and Patina and the tiny tree next to the 'Goodwill' is also glittered ... a gold start brad has been added to the centre tree ... the red backing paper is patterned with tiny handwriting text but it doesn't show up in my photogrph ...
Card 3 is my favourite and is made in a similar way to the one above but I have used painted papers that I have made as the background and for the trees too, maybe I should have reversed the colourway though :-))
The reason I have no more time is because we're off to see Gravity 3D in and hour or so - I am a bit scared ... hope I don't get 'seasick'
Paperartsy was 10 years old this August and as part of their celebrations they invited their Twitter followers to take part by making projects from the 'ingredients' in a mystery parcel - now they have done this before and the loyal 'PAtwits' that time received 3 items (hence #3UP!) to make a Paperartsy project with.
THIS time the packages were a little bigger and this is what was in mine ...
Actually in my excitement I forgot to take a picture before I had started so missing from above is the substrate, white 'Smoothy' card and a bunch of blue tinged paper roses - more details below ...
This is what I made ...
My colour swatch was Mermaid, Beach Hut and
Claret (3 Fresco paints I already have) and I added a bit of Pumkin Soup also
from my own stash. My pack included a substrate - hanging Icon (26751/1) that
measures 20cm x 10cm x 1.3 cm; stamp set IDE5EZ, a bunch of small blue tinged
paper roses, 3 plain wooden scalloped circles, white 'Smoothy' card and a silver coloured bird charm. My
challenge to myself was to use all these items.
The Icon was covered with a Seven Gypsies
patterned paper using matt medium and painted first with a coat of watered down
Vintage Lace Fresco Paint. I used my own stencil and Snowflake paint for the
next layer and then, once it was dry, added Mermaid, Beach Hut, Claret and Pumpkin
Soup paints sparingly with a baby wipe. A coat of matt medium then protected
this layer. When it was dry Grunge Paste was added through another stencil in
just 2 places. Once dry more paint was added, a little at a time using all 4
colours, and then I stencilled through some sequin waste with Claret and Beach
Hut to add more interest. Once dry Aquamarine Treasure Gold was added on top of
the Grunge paste and around the edges of the Icon. I also used a Paperartsy
Mini 61 and Versafine black ink to stamp a little text randomly over the piece.
This piece is heavily influenced by a recent class I took with Lin Brown.
The house was stamped with Versafine Black
onto Smoothy stamping card and cut out. I layered it twice more with card to
give a solid chipboard feel. The house was stamped again onto patterned papers
that matched the colour scheme and was paper pieced as shown. I used Glossy
Accents to fill in the top central ‘square’ and when dry added Black Diamond
Stickles to the ‘spade’ symbol. The Mystery section was re-stamped, cut out 3
times and layered up and then covered in Glossy Accents I used my own brads
each end and then glued it on the top to give further depth and dimension.
The ticket from the stamp set was stamped
and cut out 3 times, layered onto another layer of card and glued along the
bottom of the icon. I added the house and then painted the silver bird charm
with beach hut and added Aquamarine Treasure Gold over it with a few tiny
touches of Claret and Pumpkin Soup paint. Two of the wooden ‘flowers’ were
painted with the paints to match the background and stamped with another stamp
from the set as shown. These were placed at the top right of the piece (I had
smudged a bit of the text stamping and needed to cover it up!). The blue
flowers were tinged with Treasure Gold and then glued in place along with three
claret coloured smaller flowers from my own stash. A couple of close ups ...

A dimensional flower made from Paperartsy stamps and dies ... I quite liked how it turned out so gave it a home this morning ...
The tag is coloured using Paperartsy Fresco Finish paints. I have added some Paperartsy Grunge Paste through a stencil to add textue, some background stamping and Paperartsy Treasure Gold in Aquamarine to highlight the raised reas and the edges of the petals. The colours are a bit closer in 'real life' - I only have a few of the paint colours so getting a close mix was tough.
